Screening fertilizers for their phosphorus runoff risk using laboratory methods

چکیده

Losses of phosphorus (P) from fertilized fields may result in degradation water quality. Various initiatives are under evaluation to minimize contamination, including the adoption less soluble or coated P fertilizer formulations aiming mitigate losses runoff. Field-based rainfall simulators traditionally used evaluate runoff, but using these is time consuming, labor intensive, and costly given complex apparatus analyses involved. We hypothesized that laboratory-based methods could be useful risk runoff fertilizers. In order identify a rapid, inexpensive, efficient screening process, we compared two laboratory-scale measurements, one (based on electrical conductivity measurements) soil visualization diffusion soil), with results field-, glasshouse-, simulators, phosphate The assessing release rate correlated closely (r ≥ .96) obtained three regardless type coating solubility fertilizer. faster inexpensive methodologies were rank fertilizers by Hence, tools for respect their risk.

Phosphorus Risk Assessment Index Evaluation Using Runoff Measurements

An index to evaluate the phosphorus (P) pollution potential of agricultural fields was proposed by Lemunyon and Gilbert in 1993. Data .from three rainfall simulation studies were used to evaluate the relative importance of the variables in the P index. These studies included plots containing sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L), and corn (Zea mays L) residues on whic...

An empirical model for dissolved phosphorus in runoff from surface-applied fertilizers

Dissolved phosphorus (P) in runoff from surface-applied fertilizers can be relatively great, but commonly used, field or watershed-scale computer models often do not simulate direct transfer of fertilizer P to runoff. Using data from our own simulated rainfall experiments and published runoff studies, we developed a simplemodel to predict fertilizer P release during rain and the concentration o...

Determining phosphorus release rates to runoff from selected Alberta soils using laboratory rainfall simulation.

Phosphorus losses from agricultural land can cause accelerated eutrophication of surface water bodies. This study evaluated the use of soil test phosphorus (STP) levels to predict dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations in runoff water from agricultural soils using laboratory rainfall simulation. The objectives of this study were to determine (i) to what extent STP concentrations ca...

Phosphorus Runoff Losses from Alfalfa

Phosphorus (P) released from plants after freezing at the end of the growing season may be a contributor to P in runoff from agricultural landscapes. We evaluated P release from alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and mixed grass species [mainly quackgrass (Agropyron repens)] after freezing or drying in laboratory and field studies. Freezing released 18-30 % of the total P as dissolved reactive P (DRP...
